Anthropic is poised for a historic public listing later this year, with expectations that the company will debut at a valuation of up to $2 trillion. This anticipated move represents a pivotal moment for the artificial intelligence sector, signaling that the market is ready to price in the massive scale of the leading AI lab. For the investors who backed the company during its formative years, this transition from private to public markets promises a significant financial windfall, converting illiquid equity into tangible, substantial wealth.
The sheer scale of these potential gains is already evident in the current private market data. Even before the IPO, Anthropic’s latest private valuation stands at $965 billion. At this pre-listing price point, the stakes held by various venture capital firms and individual backers already aggregate to billions of dollars. This trajectory suggests that the final public offering price could further amplify the returns on these early and late-stage investments, cementing the financial positions of those who identified the company's potential early on.
One of the most striking examples of this appreciation is the stake held by Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO. Schmidt invested in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, a time when the startup was valued at just $461 million according to PitchBook data. His early entry has allowed him to accumulate approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, that modest percentage ownership translates to a holding worth nearly $10 billion, illustrating the exponential growth trajectory of the firm since its inception.
Late-stage investors have also seen dramatic returns, although their entry points were significantly higher. Iconiq, for instance, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year, at a time when the company was already valued at $183 billion. This massive capital injection has now grown to a stake worth $17 billion. Given the projected IPO valuation of $2 trillion, analysts suggest that Iconiq’s position has the potential to double again, highlighting how even later-stage bets can generate extraordinary absolute returns in high-growth tech sectors.
Established venture capital firms that have maintained long-term relationships with the company are seeing their portfolios swell accordingly. Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic’s Series D, has invested more than $1 billion over time. This sustained commitment has resulted in a stake currently valued at $14 billion. Similarly, Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the valuation was $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to reach a value of $7 billion.
More recent entrants have also secured lucrative positions, albeit with different risk profiles. Sequoia, the renowned VC firm, first backed the AI lab earlier this year when the company was already valued at $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured approximately 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment in a short period. Meanwhile, Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. The firm has since funneled an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a stake that is now worth billions, despite Kutcher leaving the firm this year to launch a new venture.
The context of these valuations underscores the rapid maturation of the AI industry. The jump from a $461 million valuation in 2021 to a potential $2 trillion public listing in less than five years is unprecedented. For the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions, which host significant corporate and financial sectors, this story serves as a case study in how concentrated capital in high-growth technology can reshape the wealth landscape. The outlook remains positive for these backers, as the IPO is expected to provide liquidity and further validate the market’s confidence in Anthropic’s position as a leader in artificial intelligence.
